Out & About
The Peat Spade Inn has long been a favourite with folk who love to fish, thanks to our prime location in the heart of one of the finest and best-known fly fishing areas in the world, Test Valley in West Hampshire.
Enjoy a day fishing on a picturesque beat on the River Test, which meanders through ancient woodlands, tranquil water meadows and rolling chalk hills. Since the river is home to an abundance of brown trout, grayling and salmon, you won’t fail to catch at least one or two fish, which we will happily prepare for you for dinner.
If you’re not a fan of fishing, then don’t worry, as picturesque Test Valley offers plenty more for visitors to enjoy. We are situated in Longstock, one of the most beautiful villages in the area. Take a 30-minute stroll down the main winding street, which is lined with brick and thatch period houses, before arriving at Longstock Water Gardens. These fine water gardens are home to an array of stunning plants including more than 40 different waterlily species, as well as water birds, insects, butterflies and fish.
If aviation or the military is something that grabs your interest, then head to the Museum of Army Flying, an award-winning museum about the history of flying in the British Army. Just a 10-minute drive away, the museum has something for all the family, with fascinating displays, flight simulators and an indoor play space.
Or why not venture further afield to one of the many other picturesque villages in Test Valley. There are many opportunities for walking, horse riding and cycling, and numerous other attractions for all ages. We are also just 20 miles north of Southampton, and midway between the cities of Winchester and Salisbury, all of which are also well worth a visit.
