Out & About

The Peat Spade Inn has long been a favourite with folk who love to fish, thanks to our prime location in the heart of one of the finest and best-known fly fishing areas in the world, Test Valley in West Hampshire.

Enjoy a day fishing on a picturesque beat on the River Test, which meanders through ancient woodlands, tranquil water meadows and rolling chalk hills. Since the river is home to an abundance of brown trout, grayling and salmon, you won’t fail to catch at least one or two fish, which we will happily prepare for you for dinner.

If you’re not a fan of fishing, then don’t worry, as picturesque Test Valley offers plenty more for visitors to enjoy. We are situated in Longstock, one of the most beautiful villages in the area. Take a 30-minute stroll down the main winding street, which is lined with brick and thatch period houses, before arriving at Longstock Water Gardens. These fine water gardens are home to an array of stunning plants including more than 40 different waterlily species, as well as water birds, insects, butterflies and fish.

If aviation or the military is something that grabs your interest, then head to the Museum of Army Flying, an award-winning museum about the history of flying in the British Army. Just a 10-minute drive away, the museum has something for all the family, with fascinating displays, flight simulators and an indoor play space.

Or why not venture further afield to one of the many other picturesque villages in Test Valley. There are many opportunities for walking, horse riding and cycling, and numerous other attractions for all ages. We are also just 20 miles north of Southampton, and midway between the cities of Winchester and Salisbury, all of which are also well worth a visit.

Don't just take our word for it

I know this pub of old, and it is still a gem. The ladies running the place were very welcoming and friendly. I had just had a very long journey from Turkey and had been stuck in snow for 24 hours so this was a welcoming that I needed. I had a truly excellent pint of nutty beer - well two actually - followed by a delicious sit down meal. My room was well thought out, and rich in heritage and character, the mattress perfect for my quiet rural slumber. To finish off, a delicious breakfast with some of the best black pudding I have ever tasted. I was a very happy bunny! Worth every penny.

I recently took my mum away for a mid-week rest at the Peat Spade Inn. What a glorious place to stay! The twin room was beautifully decorated and furnished to a very high standard and spotlessly clean. The rooms are set back in their own little area with your own front door. A beautiful place!

I'm annoyed that it took me 6 months to find this place. This is the quintessential village pub so very absent from the more financially motivated Stockbridge area. The bar is great. The food fulsome and fantastic fare. The bar staff are friendly, welcoming and cheerful. My in-laws stayed here for Christmas. The pub was overwhelmingly welcoming and accommodating. We will come here often on the future. Best pub in the Stockbridge area.
